This book came unexpectedly with another book in the series about Colonial America. My kids attention was held from beginning to end even though these are not the type of books they normally read. The reading level seems to be for 4th-6th graders to read on their own but would most likely also hold the attention of younger kids as well. There is a great balance in the flow of the book of using history and educational facts in a way that in intriguing to the reader. Don't be turned off by the illustrations. They may seem basic compared to other book because that is the nature of watercolor looking pictures. These simpler pictures support the content without being distracting like other books might do but still add to the content and allow for discussion. This book also has a glossary in the back support the content of the book and allows kids to learn and remember the new words and names that they learned about. I can see my kids going back to these book as the topic comes up in school.
